mini XL
Hardware:
- 60” Grand WEGA™ LCD Projection HDTV
- Maxxed out Mac mini - 1.42Ghz, SuperDrive, Bluetooth, Airport Extreme
- DVI to HDMI converter cable - Much cheaper cables are available from MonoPrice
To hook up the Mac mini to Sony 60xS955:
- use a conventional monitor
- install DisplayConfigX
- set up resolution as found here *
- shutdown mini
- connect DVI to HDMI cable (video 7)
- reboot mini hooked to SONY
- switch back to conventional monitor and change the resolution to the 1192 X 680 one
- switch to SONY using DVI to HDMI cable
- on TV setup -> display - video7 -> overscan -> -1
- test by rebooting
- optional - headphone jack to RCA audio cable (audio 7)
Most applications look great including playing DVDs in full screen. The quality is just as good as a standard DVD player. iPhoto slideshows look amazing because of the size and quality of the screen. Real Player and Quicktime both play well at full screen (depending on the quality of the source). The system is definately usable as a standard display, but its great when used as a media center type device.
Support CenterStage, the Macintosh Media Center Project so we can make this experiment useful.
Your Help: Looking for an inexpensive wireless keyboard with trackpad built in. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks to Carl Hirsch whi suggested this Bluetooth Keyboard and Trackball from Motion Computing.
Issues:
- Xwindow on the mini iMac hangs up after awhile and requires reboot! (after about 24 hours)
- Small cropping on bottom (ie. missing check mark when application is open)
- programs that change video mode (ie. iTunes with screen effects) do not work
- iMove complains about the height of the screen not being >768 (Does anyone know of any workarounds?)

I have had some success in getting my Mac Mini to display on the SONY KD-34XBR960.
First, I discovered that when I removed the DVI cable from back of the Mini and connected the DVI for the SONY, the Mac Mini would in fact recognize the SONY as a 1920X1080 display and sync to that setting, not retaining the setting from the previous monitor. However the SONY will not function at 1080p (only 1080i is supported in the Sony) so the screen was always black. I found this by installing Timbuk2 Pro, remote control software, on the Mac Mini and another Mac on my home network. This also allows me to control the display preference and set the Mini to HDTV720p as a starting point for adjusting DisplayConfigX.
Second, I then found that you cannot adjust the Vertical Front Porch in DisplyConfigX. So I can't correctly setup the vertical positioning of the display. Harald Schweder of DisplyConfigX fame has confirmed this issue and he thinks it will be working in Mac OSX-4, Tiger.
Sorry I cannot give you exact setting figures for the SONY KD-34XBR960, but I will send my interim numbers.
